Do Not Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here

Hunny Bunny and I have been busting our collective arse to get a few projects going around nostra casa, and have FINALLY finished (or very nearly finished) the entry way that we've been fretting over since the day we moved in. Well, I've been fretting. HB is just my hunky hero who knocks out walls while I chew my fingernails as I imagine the imminent collapse of our roof. Happily, all went well, and my brand spankin' new digital camera just arrived so I documented this epic journey of hallway renovation for your viewing pleasure. Behold!

hallway

Remember when I posted all those wallpaper patterns for the ceiling? Well, I went all Wary Meyers on it instead. In case you don't remember what the hallway used to look like, I posted about it months and months ago, but here's the before picture:

hallway old

I feel a little guilty about posting those pictures to compare because my new camera is infinitely better than the old one, but I don't feel THAT bad... at least you can see that the old hallway 1) Was very brown 2) Had a weirdo faux wall thing that separated the entry from the dining room 3) Was very brown. That picture is so ugly, I want to delete it right now, but it tells of an odyssey to separate the wheat from the chaff, good from evil, brown from not brown. So I can't

After we I decided that everything about the entry (except the door) was unsalvageable, HB went up into the attic to make sure the beams weren't load bearing, and that we could actually knock that wall disaster out.

attic

I kind of wish I had never seen this, because now I'm more than a little afeared that a two headed aluminum Chimera lives in our house... But hark! No beams! Kids, you should always brave the monsters that live in the attic before you saw down your walls. Or at least send someone expendable up to check for you. The seventh level of hell can be daunting.

Once we HB discerned that the coast was clear, it was time to strip the mangy wood veneer off the studs.

dining room renovations

Are you sad that we demolished this paragon of beauty? Don't you wish we had just left it like this? Hellz no. Anon, it's time to cross the River Styx, and once you leave the shores, there is no return.

ben demolishing the wall

Only the strength and fortitude of our hero can save us now. Meanwhile, his other half is wringing her hands in despair. Right choice? Wrong choice? Purgatory is so draining.

What's that I see up ahead??? Could it be...?

heaven

HEAVEN.

Yes, one demolished wall, two coats of gray paint, new white ceiling paint, several bursts of golden goodness, door paint, trim paint, door hardware, new roman shade, new switchplate and dimmers later, It's DONE.

Except... I need some art.

hallway

As you can see from the dining room, there's a hole there. Does this complaint sound familiar? Since this little project cost a lot more than I would have thought, I'll be hanging a piece that I already own. So far, I have three serious contenders who must battle for my undying love. I'm trying to choose something relatively simple, but interesting (of course!).

Uno:

good old neil

This is Good Old Neil, a photo that my pal Eric Belland made while we were but starry eyed graduate students. Neil is a ladies' man, sure to charm whosoever may cross our threshold.

Due:

peter

This is a surrealish etching that my friend Peter made while we were in Hawaii, before he defected to SFAI. Chump. It's a pretty good print, though, and it shows some subtly naughty bits for our visitors to behold.

Tre:

demon boy

You may remember Demon Boy, Spawn of Hades, from my last post. I think he might add that certain je ne sais quois to my entry. Also, he would thrust evildoers from our home after 3am, when they are most likely to inflict damage.

Thus ends our collective pilgrimage, but the work has only begun for HB and I. He is ecstatic about this fact. Nevertheless, I hope to regale you with new tales of decorating delights ASAP.

Word.

How I spent my summer vacation

When I first started this blog I planned on having lots of how-tos (man they are a pain to put together, hence their absence) and a detailed log of all my home renovations.  I figured the whole world my mom would be waiting with baited breath to see the exact color gray I finally settled on, or how high my baseboards were.  We've been hacking away at this blog for months now but I have yet to share a single renovation image.  Poor you.  There's so much I still need to do before our house even begins to resemble my decor fantasy but we've already done a lot in the 3 short months since we've moved in, I think it's time to give Matt and I a smallish pat on the back:

living room

Here's my light-filled living room, I bought the house for it's high ceilings (the lowest one is 10 feet) and ginormus windows, also because Erin almost fainted from hyperventilation when we first toured the house. So Far I've ripped up the carpet, laid white and gray concrete overlay;  painted the walls gray; stenciled the big wall with the pretty pattern shown here; and ripped out the old door (to my bedroom) and put in this lovely vintage door on barn tracks.  We also installed the floating shelves, which are haphazardly arranged at present.  The furniture in this photo does not represent the arrangement I plan to maintain, but it works for now.  I also want to paint that door but, hey, one thing at a time.

Here are some progress photos:

stencil partial

the most tedious project of my life.  Thank god for beer and ladders.

before before

doesn't that tile around the fireplace and the band-aid colored paint make you want to puke?  Me too, which is why I have photo #2 of Matt ripping the tile off the floor, what a good husband.

fireplace

the fireplace as it stands today, still needing tile and a paint job.  Note:  Matt took the tiles off the floor in front of the fireplace but my dear, sweet mother actually removed the heinous offending tiles from the facade.  On the left are the lovely 6" baseboards we installed.  I hate wimpy short baseboards and my big-tall ceilings beg for a substantial anchor.  I love them.

couch

here's my couch that I recently painted and recovered.  I still need to make bolster pillows.  I also want approximately 864 more bright pillows to throw across the back.  It's no dream couch, but for $130 off craigslist, it will do for now.  Plus, it's much better than it was before:

couch before

eeeewwwww, my eyes burn.

This weekend I started to move into the hallway:

hallway

right: before with band-aid walls, band-aid carpet and my cute husband.  left: I've ripped out the baseboards and the molding from around all the doors (MYSELF!) and painted it white, the lines are chalk lines I put up last night to mark off where I will be painting stripes.  When complete, the hall will have alternating 6" white and gray stripes.  We also took out all the old hollow-core doors and replaced them with these vintage solid ones.  They will be painted white along with the new trim / molding / baseboards.  New handles too.  Which reminds me, anyone have a good handle source? I found a few I like, but at $200 a pop I think I need to keep shopping.  I'll give you the afters once the hall is done.

gold panther

And just because I couldn't leave you with a picture of my ugly half-completed hallway, here is a shot of my GOLD panther table.  Erin does not lie, I will spray paint anything gold, especially if it is a panther that wants to hold my cocktails.

I chose not to bore you with photos of the dream closet renovation we did, but just so you know we're not sitting on our fannies around here, I'll tell you that we knocked out a new door in the wall (on a whim at midnight one night) so we could have 2 closet entrances, installed a boat-load of shelves and rails and hung a sweet globe lamp from the ceiling.  Now Matt isn't even allowed to put away his own clothes, I do it myself so that they can always be perfectly neat and organized, he makes a big boy mess.

So, there you have it, 600 projects down, only a million-gazillion to go.

pantone 380c

Ok, so I think I got all of the dutch nonsense out of my system yesterday and now I can get back to the task at hand:  waxing poetic about my newest most favoritest shade of yellow: clean, crisp, neon lemony-ish!  (NOT warm murky school bus macaroni).

I just hung a fantastic vintage door on a barn-door track in my living room, I thought I wanted to paint it lime, yet every swatch I looked at just looked so, um, tired.  Then I realized, ah ha!!  I don't want lime, I want lemon.  How could I have been so silly?  I'm obsessed now.  I had a bit of a hard time finding the perfect shade for this post, I had to sift through LOTS of macaroni yellows.  yuck.  But here are more good ones:

Actually, those Etsy kids were all over the lemon yellow:

One of the reasons I want to paint my door yellow is because it's going to open to my black, white and lemon bedroom.  I REALLY REALLY want a bold, graphic lemon bedspread.  Here are some textiles I found with my color mixed in:

textiles

Mauste duvet by Pia Holm for Marimekko, Blossom Velvet Box pillow at Urban Outfitters; Warbler Green Pillow by Salvor Fauna available at wandrlust; Toile Lemon Rug by Madeline Weinrib Atelier

As a general rule, I can not afford Madeline Weinrib, here are some other possible textiles for my bedroom:

Flower Mess bedspread by Ferm Living;  Rainbow Jungle Tapestry available at Urban Outfitters;  Pine Dish Towel also by Ferm Living

I am almost in love with the flower mess bedspread, I'm a little worried that it might end up being the wrong shade of yellow in person.  The Rainbow Jungle Tapestry bedspread is cute but I almost can't order it by default... seriously, it has the 3 worst words ever in the title.  And, I know, I know, that is a dish towel, not a bed linen, perhaps I could use it to make a throw or something?

And to see the yellow in a room:

So, after all this fuss I bet you're thinking that this door of mine better be pretty special.  Well, here it is:

door

I know, I know, the cream looks perfect in this picture, and, why would I want to paint it yellow?  I'm going to be moving things around and adding new stuff.  It's going to look great when it's done.  promise.  I'll share pictures.  On another note, how do you like my stencil wall?  I'll give you a how to on that as soon as I muster the strength to type it all out.

So, what does everyone say?  Are we loving the yellow?
