I've been doing freelance for about 5 years. I've been completely self-employed for just over 2. While I may not know exactly how a 401K works, I do get to work in my pajamas, make my own hours, and go on vacation whenever I would like. There are a few draw-backs - in addition to the 401K thing - for example, sometimes I never get out of my pajamas; my social circle consists of Laser, Magnus, Rowdy and, sometimes, Matt; and, with an office in my house, I'm always filled with "I should be working" guilt and don't quite know when to clock out. Looks like any old coffee shop, right? While coffee shops are often repurposed by us freelancers as a make-shift office, Shelter has taken the concept one step further: This is an office space for freelancers and small business owners.
For a minimum monthly fee, sole proprietors can rent office space at Shelter, conducting the business of one surrounded by a team of peers. Shelter's mission is to facilitate the creativity that comes from interaction while, well, getting you the hell out of your pajamas and into the world.
Members have benifits that include access to a cinema, a lecture hall (supposedly they have great creative guest lectures lined up but that page wasn't working), classrooms a little shop, and, most importantly:
The brasserie. Look at that spread, it sure as hell beats the PBJ and BBQ chips I normally indulge in. I actually think this food is included at no additional charge. But I'm not sure, so, all you readers in Dubai, don't go knockin on their door demanding a free lunch without double checking first.
While I'm quite pleased with the interior decor in my own home, I wouldn't be too mad if I found myself eating lunch here a few days a week. At whatever time I like, of course.
