New York Times Slideshow Mash-Up

I love the New York Times Home slideshows.  Even homes that aren't my taste are always made interesting by excellent lighting and relevant commentary.  This week's line-up, however, looked more like the makings of an episode of Wife Swap then hard-hitting journalism.  First up we have a genuinely interesting, if not insane, article about a couple living in a yurt.  Yes.  A yurt.  Directly next to that on the Style homepage was what could easily be considered the most boring home-shoot ever to hit the interwebs, and I'm even including google "boring home" image search in my ranking.  I couldn't help but hear the snarky voice of the anonymous Wife Swap narrator when sifting through the images.  Let's see if we can make this work

Meet the Higman-McKittrick family:  Mother, Erin and father, Bretwood live in a yurt 90 miles from civilization in the Alaskan wilderness.  The Higman-McKittricks have forsaken running water and indoor heating in exchange for life in a $14,000, 400 square foot tent, which can only be reached by plane or boat.

This week on Wife Swap, Erin will be flying over 3,000 miles to swap places with a woman she's never met who lives in the Bronx.

Meet the Khinda-O'Donnell family:  Elizabeth Khinda is an algebra teacher while fiance, Thomas, is a telecommunications worker.  The Khinda-O'Donnells live in a standard size apartment outside Manhattan, Elizabeth claims to love anything pink and girly while Thomas wears a windbreaker.  The Khinda-O'Donnells engage in a rare interior design activity known to few as "seasonal decorating."

Without the benefit of an accessible grocery store, mom, Erin begins her day with a quaint round of front-yard ice fishing.

Back in the Bronx, Elizabeth admires the Ikea light fixture her electrically-inclined fiance hung over their holiday table.

Father, Bretwood prepares for the long winter by building a fire from the wood he hand chopped this morning and lining the yurt with quilts woven from angel tears

The season is well underway back in New York for the Khinda-O'Donnell family, who, again, pride themselves on their seasonal decorating techniques.

With baby Katmai strapped to her back, Erin cooks family meals on the only working electrical appliance in the couple's home.

Back on the east coast, someone finds this photo of the Khinda-O'Donnell family kitchen relevant to seasonal decorating.

After a long day of trekking through snow and chopping wood, the Higman-McKittrick family settle into bed on their shared futon nestled behind a curtain hand-woven by Erin.

The Khinda-O'Donnells take one last look at their bedroom dressers, one appropriately bare, suiting his masculine sensibilities, and another with a mirror and wind-up ballerina reflecting her girly outlook, before snuggling into their boring bed with only one nightstand.

This summer, the Higman-McKittrick family will be embarking on a 200 mile journey by inflatable raft (this is real) to unmined coal repositories in northwest Alaska

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Khinder will be swapping out her holiday decor for this target pillow to usher in the new season.

See what happens when these two families swap lives for two weeks:  new husbands, new children, new rules.

So, are you dudes tuning in?

...Aaaaaand We're Back!

Whatup, whatup, pals -- welcome to 2010! Karly and I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year, filled with a heaping helping of awesomeness. Peeping around the blogosphere I see that many of you have been busy elves, posting your wee little hearts out. Must be because Apartment Therapy ran their biggo blog contest during the holidays, and everyone enjoys watching their stats raise the roof thanks to AT's traffic driving link love.

Guess who went on vacation during all the brouhaha? Oops. Because, had we been here instead of traveling and eating and boozing, we most certainly would have been big pimping, and you would have voted for us, right? Right. To those of you who did take the initiative to vote for DC without us gently prodding demanding that you do so -- much love and many thanks. Now we be friends 4EVA.

But The Homies ain't over yet. There are six finalists and we have two whole days left to convince you to vote for our favorite blog:

door sixteen

door sixteen

Door Sixteen. Because Anna is always mixing it up, posting fresh roundups coupled with witty insights. And, she works crazy hard renovating her New York Victorian home to spectacular result, which is obviously a labor of love. Somehow she also manages to be simultaneously timely and timeless -- no small feat. Plus she has cute bangs and two lovable pooches. What more could you ask for in a blog?

AT highlighted a motherload of greatness, so while I'm at it I'd like to give a shoutout to a few of my favorite homies. I can't possibly list all of them, but these high vote getters shine brightly because they all feature their own homes and design work. Everyone loves to read roundups and trend reports, but nothing beats a sweet reveal.

brick house

brick house

The chick from The Brick House slays me. Apparently she lives near Palm Springs, which is squarely in superthrift central. You have no idea how jealous I am of her finds -- Austin is the most picked over thrift scene in the universe. Pffft. Also, she's a photographer. And she's a teacher. And she likes black paint. Hmmm. Reminds me of someone else I know...

whorange

whorange

It's always martini time at Whorange. You gotta love the eye popping retro appeal, her feel good posts, and most importantly, her magnificent hair. Tula is the girl you want to go out on the town with, because you know she'll take you to all the best art openings, and she'll totally notice your fabulous shoes.

right bank

right bank

Who has impeccable taste and a penchant for moving... a lot? Whether in Paris, Seattle, or Atlanta, Ally of From the Right Bank makes each home uniquely her own. Plus she's about the sweetest blogger out there. Tune in to see what she does with her newest project out in the deep south, but you better hurry before she's off and moving cross country. Again.

hashai

ab chao

Trendsetter AB Chao of hashai ignited a virtual firestorm when she painted her bedroom Farrow and Ball's Downpipe. After winning fan favorite in All the Best's bedroom design contest, she's landed a client of her very own. Now that's she's gone pro, we're all waiting with baited breath to see who she's designing for...

lampshade

lampshade

Last but not least, Raina of If the Lampshade Fits is our homegirl. The ex designer and shop owner is currently renovating her very own Barbie dream home, and if her daughter's new digs are any indication, it's going to be killer. My only question is, when can I move in?

That's it for today's shoutouts. There are so many amazing blogs out there that I read daily, and next year I plan to take a break from my vacation and vote for them all. In the meantime, I think maybe I should start posting more pics of my house, which I'm pretty sure is a great idea, but I'm also concerned about the amount of cleaning necessary to show my home to the world. I'm not trying out to be on Hoarders or anything, but the tot's toys have multiplied like tribbles, and Fisher Price is taking over our house.

Guess I better get to work on taking it back.

Time Travelers

Karly and I have decided to reward our hard work and unflagging dedication to paint gangstas and laser light makeovers and seizure inducing trends with a blogcation. A blogiday. A bloggatical. So we're going to glut ourselves with nog and booze, and sleep in and watch bad TV, until the year 2010 -- which seems like it must be far, far away in the future, but is actually only 2 weeks from now. Can you believe it's almost 2010 and I don't have a robot butler, or a jetpack, or a flying car that will shuttle me around despite my expired driver's license? The future has really been a huge disappointment thus far. However, Karly and I have a few plans in store for the new year which will make the future a whole lot brighter for you guys -- our beloved readers, who will hopefully return even though we're going to leave the blog totally untended for two whole weeks. To tempt you back, we're planning to have stuff to buy, and more stuff to look at, and we're even going to let people hire us to do things. So yeah, 2010 will be spectacularly full of awesome stuff and things.

In the meantime, we'd like to leave you with some season's greetings:

ike roy

Sweet Baby Ike would like to wish you Happy Holidays and a Rrrrrrrroaring Good New Year. See you all on January 4th!
